ABOUT ME

-Women’s Rights Activist / Journalist/ Author/ Poet- Emine Dilek was born in Izmir, Turkey to Hayriye and Osman Nuri, the oldest of two children in a working-class family. As a child, Emine Dilek read and wrote constantly. Emine’s mother was a school teacher who introduced her children to the love of books and reading.

Emine Dilek began writing as part of an informal group of poets and writers in several online platforms. She is the founder and publisher of the Progressive Press digital news magazine. She has two blogs where she writes about women’s issues and translates Turkish poetry. She is a contributing editor for Women's Views on News. She also writes as an international business columnist for the Palm Beach Woman Magazine. Many of her features and opinion pieces have been published in prominent women's rights organizations' websites and magazines. She hosted a radio programme called Women’s Voice for over a year.

She has stated that “I always found writing to be my main communication tool. As a child, when I felt that I was not understood orally, I would write these long letters to my parents and friends; sometimes even to myself.”

She has moved to USA in 1993; after working as an immigrant for minimum wage for years, most of the time working at two or three jobs and going to school at nights, she was able to finish college and have her son at the same time. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management.

She is a member of NOW (National Organization of Women), WOW (Women for Women International) and The Pixel Project. She volunteers for local charities concerning women and she is a long supporter of Eve Ensler and the V-day project.

Even though she does not like labels, she considers herself a feminist. Her favorite quote “I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a door mat or a prostitute.” ~Rebecca West
